Chiang Mai, Thailand’s second largest city, is nestled in the mountains along the Ping River and is considered to be the cultural center of northern Thailand. Also known as Thailand’s ‘Northern Gem’, Chiang Mai certainly lives up to its nickname, with its moated old city, colorful street bazaars, funky live music scene, world-renowned festivals, hundreds of temples, and eclectic cuisine. This city offers chic fashion, trendy coffee shops, and restaurants. Although Chiang Mai is a large city, it has managed to retain much of the charming characteristic of smaller Thai towns and is home to a close-knit CBO and NGO community.
Motorbikes are the preferred mode of transportation for locals and long-term expats, but you can also easily navigate the streets of Chiang Mai on a push bike. Tuk-tuks, motorbike taxis, and songthaews are also widely available. For those who prefer city life, but still desire culture, beautiful mountain views, and exposure to a robust NGO community, Chiang Mai is the perfect place.
